Kathy Doughty of Material Obsessions is coming to QuiltTalk next week. I met Kathy a few years ago when I was part of the organizing committee at Quilts at the Creek, we arranged to have her come to Toronto for a couple of workshops. I have been a fan for years and own all her books. I have many of her quilts on my bucket list. I love the way she combines her fabrics, it must be something in the Australian air. She has many fans in Toronto.
I decided to sort thru my pictures and find quilts that were made as the result of Kathy’s workshops. This design called Gypsy Kisses, is one of my favourites, probably because it would be a good scrap buster. This one was made by Michelle; who used many Liberty cottons, note the unusual background print. Michelle wanted Stitch in the Ditch quilting as she planned to fill in with some big stitch quilting.
One of the workshops that is very popular with Kathy is a design called Love Birds. This one has made by Alexandra. My photo is not that great, you might notice that Alexandra decided to forgo the expense of custom quilting and chose an allover design, quilted with a very fine thread. I support this idea wholeheartedly.
Here are some closeups. I have posted about Love Birds before, the block with the two birds still makes me chuckle, I always think of a wife scolding her husband!
This next quilt was made by Michelle, (I think), ohh…. I should blog about quilts quicker and I would remember names. It is a great fabric study and this one has so many fabrics that I love.
Here are a few closeups. What a great mix of fabrics!
Michele took another workshop with Kathy at Quilting by the Lake, it is one from her latest book; Organic Appliqué. I can see that Michele used Wedges and Appliqué in this quilt.
Here are a few closeups.
I hope that you can see that Kathy encourages students to use what to most would be an eclectic combination of fabrics and prints. We are bringing Kathy in next week for a trunk show and the following week for a workshop. If you want to be influenced by a bold quilter sign up at QuiltTalk , you don’t want to miss out this one.
